Political Contribution Tax Credits
Political contributions in Canada are eligible for generous tax credits — more generous than charitable donation credits. The federal tax credit for political contributions is:
- 75% on the first $400 contributed
- 50% on the next $350
- 33.3% on the next $525
- Maximum credit of $650
Provincial tax credits vary by province but follow similar tiered structures.
Contribution Limits
Each jurisdiction sets its own contribution limits:
- Federal: $1,700 per year to each registered party; $1,700 per election to each candidate
- Ontario: $1,697 per year to each registered party; $1,697 per campaign period to each candidate
- Quebec: $100 per year total (across all parties and candidates)
- Other provinces: Limits vary — always check your provincial election authority
Receipt Requirements
Every political contribution receipt must include:
- Full legal name of the contributor
- Home address (not business address)
- Date of the contribution
- Amount of the contribution
- Receipt number (sequential)
- Name and registration number of the registered party or candidate
- Authorized signature of the official agent or financial agent
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Issuing receipts for anonymous donations over $20: Anonymous contributions over $20 are not permitted at the federal level
- Accepting corporate donations: Corporate and union donations are prohibited federally and in many provinces
- Missing the filing deadline: Late return filing can result in penalties and loss of candidate subsidies
- Not tracking in-kind contributions: Goods and services donated to a campaign have a monetary value that counts toward contribution limits
